MET-PRO SFS Base Track / Channel - 274mm
274mm plain galvanised channel with 40mm flanges, 1.2mm gauge, fixed to the slab to set out a steel framed wall. In 3m, 4m or 6m lengths.
The 274mm MET-PRO base track is a plain un-lipped channel, fixed to the slab to set out a steel framed wall and used to close the ends of floor and roof runs. The studs drop into it, so the track, not the stud, sets the line of the wall.
It is rolled 4mm wider than the stud it receives — the two track walls wrapping either side — so the 270mm stud seats in this 274mm track.
Its flanges are 40mm and plain, against the slotted head track's 70mm. The foot of the wall is a fixed connection, so it needs neither the slots nor the extra leg depth that let the stud travel at the head.
Supplied in 1.2mm gauge, in 3m, 4m or 6m lengths. Pair with the 270mm MET-PRO SFS stud and the matching 274mm slotted head track.
MET-PRO SFS is supplied as an engineered system. Sections are sized, specified and cut for your project, so send us your drawings or loadings and our in-house engineering team will design the frame, provide construction details and quote.

What is SFS, and when would I use it instead of timber?
Structural framing system — light gauge galvanised steel studs and tracks used to build infill walls and internal partitions. It does not rot, twist, burn or attract moisture, it comes dead straight, and the sections are consistent, which matters a lot on a tall infill panel or where a facade has to line through.
What is slotted head track for?
It lets the structure above the wall deflect without loading the studs. The stud is fixed through a vertical slot rather than pinned solid, so when the slab or beam above moves the wall is not carrying that movement — which is what cracks a rigidly fixed partition.
Do I need to order the accessories separately?
Yes — base track, head track, cleats and window components are listed separately because the combination changes with every wall. Send us the wall build-up, the height and the openings and we will schedule the lot.
What is the difference between a C section and a Z section?
A C section has both flanges facing the same way, so it sits neatly on its own and is the usual choice for single spans, side rails and end bays. A Z section has flanges facing opposite ways, which lets consecutive purlins overlap at the supports — that overlap makes the run behave as a continuous beam and lets it span further for the same weight of steel.
If in doubt on a multi-bay building, Z sections with sleeved or lapped joints are normally the more efficient answer.
How do I know what size purlin I need?
It comes from the span, the spacing between purlins, and the roof loading for the site. Guessing is expensive in both directions — too light and it deflects, too heavy and you have paid for steel you did not need.
Send us the span, the centres you are planning and what the roof build-up is, and we will size it.
Do you supply the cleats and bolts?
Yes, and they should be ordered with the purlins rather than afterwards, because the cleat has to suit both the purlin section and the steelwork it is bolting to.
Can purlins be cut to length?
Yes — they are cut and punched to order, so the holes land where your steelwork actually is. Send the setting-out and we will punch to it.
