Sintered Stone Slabs — common questions

Can I cut and fit sintered stone myself?

Not realistically. It is extremely hard and it is worked wet with diamond tooling on a bridge saw or CNC — cut-outs for hobs and sinks need radiused corners and careful relief or the slab will crack, sometimes days later.

Buy the slab from us and have it fabricated by a stone workshop. We can point you to fabricators if you do not already work with one.

Does it need sealing?

No. It is fully vitrified with water absorption under 0.1%, so there is nothing for liquid to soak into. That is the practical difference between it and natural marble, which is porous and will stain from wine, oil and citrus unless it is sealed and re-sealed.

Can it be used outdoors?

Yes — it is UV stable, so it will not yellow or fade, and it is frost resistant. That makes it one of the few worktop materials that can run from an indoor kitchen straight out to an outdoor one in the same finish.

What does book-matched mean?

Two consecutive slabs cut from the same block and opened out like a book, so the veining mirrors across the joint. It is what gives an island and its splashback that continuous, symmetrical run of veining.

It has to be planned — the slabs are a matched pair, the joint position is part of the design, and it needs to be agreed with the fabricator before anything is cut.

What size are the slabs?

The large format is 3200 × 1600mm, which is what lets you run a long island or a full splashback with no joint at all. Thicknesses vary by product; 12mm is the common one for worktops with a mitred edge built up to look thicker.
